Summary

Combining neurolysis with chronic electrical stimulation significantly improved outcomes for post-traumatic sciatic neuropathy patients. This treatment enhanced pain reduction and motor function recovery compared to neurolysis alone.

Background:

  • Post-traumatic sciatic neuropathy often results in severe neurogenic pain and muscle weakness.
  • Current treatments may not fully restore function or alleviate pain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of combining neurolysis with chronic electrical stimulation for post-traumatic sciatic neuropathy.
  • To compare outcomes against neurolysis alone.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized study included 14 patients with post-traumatic sciatic neuropathy.
  • Patients were divided into two groups: neurolysis plus chronic electrical stimulation (n=6) or neurolysis alone (n=8).
  • Pain and muscle strength were assessed pre-surgery and at 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery.

Main Results:

  • The neurolysis plus electrical stimulation group showed significant pain reduction (VAS 7.16 to 2.33) and improved muscle strength and movement.
  • In the neurolysis-only group, pain reduction was less pronounced (VAS 7.42 to 5), with improvements in muscle strength and movement in fewer patients.

Conclusions:

  • Neurolysis combined with chronic electrical stimulation yields superior outcomes in post-traumatic sciatic neuropathy.
  • Chronic peripheral electrical stimulation may play a role in enhancing motor function recovery.
