Patient-reported outcomes after total knee arthroplasty with xperience vs. standard irrigation: a retrospective

Background:
XPerience Surgical Irrigation is a novel irrigant that aims to reduce the microbial load and inflammation. This study evaluated whether XPerience improved early patient-reported outcomes compared with standard irrigation in total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
Methods:
This retrospective cohort study evaluated 116 patients who underwent primary unilateral TKA at one institution. Sixty patients received XPerience, and 56 received standard irrigation (saline or povidone-iodine). Patient-reported outcomes, including PROMIS Physical Function, PROMIS Pain Interference, and KOOS JR, were collected at baseline, six weeks, and three months. Multivariable regression adjusted for baseline scores, tourniquet use, and patellar resurfacing.
Results:
Both groups showed significant improvements in patient-reported outcomes at three months (p < 0.0001). No significant differences were found between XPerience and standard irrigation in PROMIS PF (p = 0.62), PROMIS PI (p = 0.55), or KOOS JR (p = 0.47) at any time point. Baseline scores, tourniquet use, and patellar resurfacing better predicted outcomes (p < 0.05).
Conclusion:
XPerience may enhance clinical recovery but not early patient-reported outcomes compared with standard irrigation. This paper highlights the importance of evaluating both clinical and patient-centered outcomes when assessing surgical innovations.
