The ScoutPro osmolarity system offers a straightforward method for measuring tear film osmolarity in dogs. This study found the system

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Ophthalmology
  • Ocular Surface Disease
  • Diagnostic Technology

Background:

  • Tear film osmolarity is a key indicator of ocular surface health.
  • Accurate tear osmolarity measurement is crucial for diagnosing and managing dry eye disease in canines.
  • The ScoutPro system presents a novel tool for assessing tear osmolarity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the applicability and reliability of the ScoutPro osmolarity system for measuring tear film osmolarity in healthy dogs.
  • To evaluate the ease of use and reproducibility of the ScoutPro system by multiple examiners.

Main Methods:

  • Seventeen healthy dogs of various breeds were enrolled.
  • Tear osmolarity was measured using the ScoutPro osmolarity system by two examiners.

  • Intra-rater variability and inter-rater reliability were calculated through repeated measurements.
  • Main Results:

    • The ScoutPro system demonstrated ease of use and straightforward handling.
    • Mean tear osmolarity values were similar between the two examiners (323.51 ± 9.89 mOsm/L and 326.74 ± 9.02 mOsm/L).
    • Acceptable intra-rater variability (Cronbach's Alpha 0.75-0.80) and no significant inter-rater differences were observed.

    Conclusions:

    • The ScoutPro osmolarity system is applicable and easy to use for tear film osmolarity measurement in healthy dogs.
    • The system shows acceptable variability and inter-rater reliability in this cohort.
    • Further research is recommended to validate these findings and explore its use in dogs with ocular surface disease.
