A new two-component order parameter model effectively describes VO2 phase transitions. This model, using a two-dimensional irreducible representation, accurately predicts experimental data for VO2 and its solid solutions.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Solid-State Physics
- Crystallography
Background:
- Vanadium dioxide (VO2) exhibits complex structural phase transitions.
- Existing models struggle to fully capture the observed transitions in VO2 and its solid solutions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a novel two-component order parameter model for describing VO2 structural phase transitions.
- To identify ordered phases and their symmetry characteristics.
- To develop effective Landau potential models for phenomenological studies.
Main Methods:
- Development of a two-component order parameter model.
- Identification of 102 ordered phases using irreducible representations of star channel groups.
- Application of Landau potential theory with invariant groups.
- Theoretical construction of phase diagrams using an eighth-order Landau potential model.
Main Results:
- The two-component order parameter model is more effective than four-component models for VO2 transitions.
- 102 ordered phases were identified and characterized by image group invariants.
- Structurally stable Landau potential models were suggested.
- Theoretical phase diagrams showed good agreement with experimental V1-xAlxO2 data.
Conclusions:
- The proposed two-component order parameter model provides a superior description of VO2 phase transitions.
- The methodology successfully predicts and characterizes complex structural changes in VO2-based materials.
- The developed Landau potential models offer a robust framework for future phenomenological investigations.
