Aim:
This study aimed to develop and psychometrically validate a Cultural Competence Perception Inventory (CCPI) for nurses in Taiwan.
Background:
Cultural competence is essential for providing high-quality nursing care, particularly in increasingly diverse healthcare settings. To assess nurses' perceptions and readiness to provide culturally responsive care, a valid and reliable measurement tool is needed DESIGN: A two-stage cross-sectional instrument development and validation study.
Method:
Using a two-stage design, qualitative interviews with clinical nurses revealed initial item development followed by content validation by experts. A total of 358 nursing students were recruited using stratified random sampling. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted on separate subsamples to examine the construct validity. The internal consistency, convergent validity, and discriminant validity were also assessed.
Results:
The final 23-item CCPI demonstrated a four-factor structure: Cultural Positivity and Active Engagement (CPAE), Self-Efficacy in Providing Culturally Responsive Care (SPCRC), Cultural Values and Beliefs in Nursing Practice (CVBNP), and Culturally Responsive Awareness (CRA), accounting for 66.05 % of total variance. The scale showed strong reliability (Cronbach's α =.93 overall; subscales α =.83-.90),acceptable model fit (CFI =.90, RMSEA =.09), and good convergent and discriminant validity.
Conclusions:
The CCPI is a robust instrument for assessing nurses' perceptions of cultural care competence. It offers practical utility for educational assessment, professional development, and research. Broader applications across diverse healthcare settings are recommended to enhance culturally responsive nursing practices.
