A rare case of Streptococcus pyogenes vertebral osteomyelitis in a young, immunocompetent male

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) is a well-recognized cause of invasive infections. However, it's an uncommon etiologic microorganism in adult vertebral osteomyelitis. We report a rare case of vertebral osteomyelitis, discitis, epidural abscess, and bilateral psoas abscesses caused by GAS in an otherwise healthy male. Early diagnosis via imaging, microbiological confirmation, and prompt initiation of intravenous antibiotics led to clinical improvement and prevented potentially devastating complications. This case underscores another clinical presentation of invasive GAS infection and highlights the clinical course and management of this rare, but serious condition.
