Electrooculography-Based Ocular Angle Estimation of Each Ocular Globe

The use of electrooculography (EOG) for gaze estimation in the literature is generally restricted to the estimation of the point of gaze (POG) in terms of the gaze angles (GAs). In contrast, this research focuses on the processing of EOG signals to estimate the ocular angles (OAs), specifically the separate orientation of each ocular globe. A method based on the extended Kalman filter (EKF) and a battery model of the eye is used, where it is demonstrated that the standard four-electrode setup yields poor OA estimation performance, particularly for the ocular globe above and below which no electrodes are attached. This research demonstrates that this can however be improved by the inclusion of two additional electrodes superiorly and inferiorly to this eye.
