Continuous non-invasive measurement of core vital signs in the hospital ward
Abstract:
Vital sign monitoring in the hospital ward is critical to provide valuable information to predict patient deterioration or treatment efficiency. The frequency at which patients' vitals should be assessed is a compromise between insufficient monitoring and work overload. This project, in collaboration with the company Rheo, aims at providing a photoplethysmography based solution for continuous monitoring of oxygen saturation (SpO2), heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate using a unique and non-invasive upper-arm-worn device. We collected a relevant dataset to evaluate the accuracy of the estimated vital signs. Performance of vital sign estimation algorithms met medical requirements. Overall performances obtained were 2.06% root mean square error (RMSE) for SpO2, 0.88 cpm (cycle per minute) RMSE for respiratory rate, an error of -0.1 ± 7.8 mmHg for the systolic blood pressure estimate and 0.2 ± 4.3 mmHg for the diastolic blood pressure estimate and 2.08 bpm (beat-per-minute) RMSE for heart rate. The study demonstrates the feasibility of embedding algorithms for measuring various vital signs into one single non-invasive wearable device and reaching expected medical requirements.

Measurement of Blood Pressure
Equipments Used To Measure Blood Pressure
This invasive approach involves cannulating a peripheral artery. During each cardiac contraction, pressure generates mechanical motion within the catheter, transmitted through rigid, fluid-filled tubing to a transducer. This transducer converts mechanical motion into electrical signals displayed as waveforms on a monitor. An automatic flushing system prevents blood backflow. Due to the potential risk of unexpected arterial blood loss, this method is primarily used in intensive...
