Abstract:
In this study, a novel ergodic sequential logic (ELS) cochlear model is presented. It is shown that the presented model can reproduce typical nonlinear sound processing functions (i.e., combination tone generation and pitch shift effect) of human cochleae. In addition, the presented model is implemented by a field programmable gate array and realizations of the nonlinear sound processing functions are confirmed by experiments. It is also shown that the presented model is much more hardware-efficient (i.e., consumes much smaller number of electronic circuit elements and much lower electric power) than a digital-processor-based cochlear model. Furthermore, the discussion addresses the challenges involved in developing a future ELS-based hardware-efficient cochlear implant capable of reproducing various nonlinear sound processing functions of the human cochlea.Clinical Relevance-The presented ESL cochlear model would be useful to develop a future hardware-efficient cochlear implant capable of reproducing various nonlinear sound processing functions of the human cochlea.
