HealthReflect: Design of a Bathroom Smart Mirror to Capture Comprehensive Consumer Health Data Trends1
Abstract:
The growing interest in user-driven home health monitoring has led to the proliferation of connected devices, leading to a fragmented ecosystem and limits upon the data's clinical viability. Herein we propose and present the prototyping and testing of HealthReflect, a concept all-in-one device, integrated into a bathroom mirror, that identifies an individual and seamlessly collects and stores their daily vital signs (heart rate, temperature, and SpO2). In a series of 32 tests, HealthReflect demonstrated the ability to successfully monitor SpO2 and temperature with over 90% accuracy and heart rate with 78% accuracy when compared to an analog measurement device, supporting the feasibility of passive vital sign collection in everyday settings. Given these findings, we propose that having a semi-passive workflow will allow consistent, non-intrusive health data collection and, thus, be useful for varied clinical situations, including elder care, chronic condition monitoring and supporting clinical trials, as well as consumer health and wellness.Clinical Relevance- Ensuring convenient at home vital signs monitoring can enable more consistent data collection and therefore improve patient care.
