    Abstract:

    The deformation of the food bolus by the human tongue represents a manipulation process in which deformable objects are brought to a desired state by sensing their shape and adjusting tongue movements accordingly. This study introduces a soft actuator equipped with a visuo-tactile sensor that enables both surface shape sensing and actuation toward an in vitro tongue simulator to elucidate the mechanism of this manipulation. The proposed soft actuator employs a mechanism in which a deformable object is pressed against the palate by a pneumatically inflated balloon to form it. Shape sensing is achieved through visuo-tactile sensors featuring concentrically arranged ring patterns on the silicone rubber surface membrane of the balloons. Experimental results validated the accuracy of shape sensing, the forming capability for deformable objects, and viscoelasticity estimation using the sensing capability.

    Tactile senses encompass touch, temperature, and pain, each mediated by specific receptors. Touch receptors detect mechanical energy or pressure against the skin. Sensory fibers from these receptors enter the spinal cord and relay information to the brain stem. Here, most fibers cross over to the opposite side of the brain. The touch information then moves to the thalamus, which projects a map of the body's surface onto the somatosensory areas of the parietal lobes in the cerebral cortex.

    The surface of the tongue is covered with various small bumps called papillae, which either distribute what has been ingested (filiform papillae) or contain the sensory taste (or gustatory) receptor cells (fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate papillae). It starts with the activation of receptors by chemical compounds (tastants) dissolved in the saliva. The saliva and filiform papillae on the tongue distribute the tastants and increase their exposure to the taste receptors.
