Personalized Glycemic Responses in Non-diabetic Adults: Challenging the Glycemic Index Paradigm

This study aimed to elucidate interpersonal differences in postprandial glycemic responses (PPGR) among 80 non-diabetic adults, considering dietary cultural differences. Interpersonal differences were examined by comparing the PPGR of five standardized meals, including culturally relevant Asian staple foods. Half of the subjects showed PPGR patterns which aligned with the glycemic index (GI), while the other half displayed unexpected PPGR patterns that deviated from GI. Through cluster analysis based on PPGR of standardized meals, a critical connection between body composition and glycemic control was revealed. By employing glycemic variability parameters, the diversity in glycemic responses resulting from individual metabolic differences were also demonstrated.Clinical Relevance- This clarifies the differences in glycemic responses under the same nutritional interventions in non-diabetic adults, and emphasize the need for personalized glycemic control approaches considering body composition and cultural dietary differences.
