[Evaluation of Effective Slice Thickness and Its In-plane and Distribution along Z-axis in High-resolution Computed

Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the nominal minimum slice thickness of 0.25 mm by the tilted-wire averaging method in ultra-high-resolution computed tomography (UHR-CT).
Methods:
A total of nine tilted-wire averaging phantoms (donut-shaped with a diameter of 90 mm, four wires tilted from the center of the lumen), which were positioned both at the center and off-center, were scanned using non-helical and helical scans.
Results:
In non-helical scans, the effective slice thicknesses at the central position along the z-axis were 0.30-0.33 mm at the in-plane center, and 0.32-0.48 mm at the in-plane off-center. At positions far from the central z-axis, thicknesses ranged from 0.39 to 0.46 mm and 0.40 to 0.49 mm. In helical scans, thicknesses ranged from 0.43 to 0.44 mm and 0.43 to 0.48 mm.
Conclusion:
We were able to comprehensively evaluate a slice thickness of 0.25 mm by using the tilted-wire averaging method in UHR-CT.
