Summary

Occupational therapy using Ayres Sensory Integration® (OT-ASI) significantly improved sensorimotor, cognitive, emotional, and participation skills in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This evidence-based approach is recommended for therapists working with this population.

Background:

Limited research exists on Occupational Therapy based on Ayres Sensory Integration® (OT-ASI) for children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
A comprehensive evaluation is needed to understand OT-ASI's effects on sensorimotor functions, attention, executive functions, emotional regulation, and participation in children with ADHD.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a thorough assessment of the impact of OT-ASI on children diagnosed with ADHD.

Main Methods:

A randomized controlled study with pretest-posttest and single-blind designs was employed.
Ninety-four children aged 6-8 years with ADHD participated, allocated to either an intervention group (n=47) receiving 10 weeks of OT-ASI or a control group (n=47) on a waiting list.
Outcomes were measured using the Sensory Integration and Praxis Test, Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency, and goal attainment scaling, alongside secondary measures for executive functioning, emotion regulation, and participation.

Main Results:

The intervention group demonstrated statistically and clinically significant improvements across all primary and secondary outcome measures post-intervention (p < .001, η² > .25).
The control group did not exhibit significant improvements (p > .05).

Conclusions:

OT-ASI is an effective intervention for enhancing sensorimotor, attention, executive functions, emotional regulation, and participation in children with ADHD.
This study supports OT-ASI as an evidence-based occupational therapy approach for pediatric ADHD.
Occupational therapists may consider OT-ASI as a preferred intervention for children with ADHD.
