Abstract:
Human ventures into prolonged spaceflight present unique physiological challenges, making astronaut oral health a critical determinant of mission success. The extraterrestrial environment, characterized by microgravity, radiation, and extreme logistical constraints, induces systemic alterations that significantly increase the risk of debilitating oral diseases. This narrative review synthesizes current knowledge on the multifaceted impacts of space travel on the orofacial complex and examines the technological frontiers being developed to mitigate these risks. Key findings reveal that spaceflight precipitates profound physiological changes, including altered salivary composition, microbial dysbiosis that enhances pathogen virulence, and accelerated bone density loss in the jaw, which can compromise dental stability. These factors increase astronaut susceptibility to conditions such as dental caries, severe periodontal inflammation, and temporomandibular disorders. In response, aerospace dentistry is pioneering innovative countermeasures to address the limitations of conventional care in microgravity. Emerging solutions include advanced tele-dentistry platforms for real-time remote consultation, AI-powered diagnostic algorithms for early disease detection, and on-demand 3D fabrication of dental instruments. Furthermore, the development of autonomous robotic dental systems and space-adapted biomaterials, including nanotechnology composites and self-healing polymers, promises to revolutionize in-flight treatment capabilities. Prioritizing these advanced dental protocols and technologies in mission planning is imperative for safeguarding crew health, ensuring operational readiness, and paving the way for sustainable human exploration of deep space.
