Background:
Given that professional values have an impact on nursing care, it is crucial for future nurses to develop their professional values while undergoing training and to understand the importance of taking patients' spiritual values into account when planning care. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the relationship between nursing students' professional values and their perceptions of spiritual care.
Methods:
This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 344 nursing students. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Nurses' Professional Values Scale-Revised and the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale.
Results:
The mean total score for the Nurses' Professional Values Scale-Revised was 103.96 ± 17.19 and the mean total score for the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale was 143.09 ± 22.69. A positive and moderately significant correlation was found between the total score for the Nurses' Professional Values Scale-Revised and the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale (r = 0.526, p < 0.001).
Conclusion:
In this study, students' perceptions of professional values and spiritual care were found to be at a good level. There was a positive correlation between students' professional values and their perceptions of spiritual care. In this regard, it is recommended that specific curriculum modifications are implemented or a training module focused on spiritual care is developed.
