Abstract:
Copper catalysed electrochemical atom transfer radical addition (eATRA) is a newly developed method allowing the formation of C-C bonds under mild conditions whereby an electro generated organocopper(II) species plays a key role. Considering recent developments in this emergent field, the exploration of an asymmetric variant of the reaction would be an advantage. Herein, reported is the synthesis of a new chiral ligand based on a biisoquinoline scaffold suitable for copper coordination. Structural properties of the corresponding copper(II) complexes have been evaluated, disclosing both square planar and square pyramidal geometries. Spectroscopic and electrochemical characterisation of these species demonstrated similarities with previously investigated complexes, and implementation to the eATRA reaction yielded moderate activities. While these explorations did not lead to detectable chiral induction, this work contributes to building a better understanding of the role that the organocopper(II) complex plays in this reaction.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...

Accordingly, the structure of a trivalent radical lies between the geometries of carbocations and carbanions. An sp2-hybridized carbocation is trigonal planar, while an sp3-hybridized carbanion is trigonal pyramidal. Here, the difference in geometry is...
Radical Anti-Markovnikov Addition to Alkenes: Mechanism
The mechanism starts with chain initiation, which involves two steps. In the first chain initiation step, a weak peroxide bond is homolytically cleaved upon mild heating to form two alkoxy radicals. In the second initiation step, a hydrogen atom is abstracted by the alkoxy...
