A model is a theoretical way to understand a concept or an idea. Models can overcome barriers to health regardless of diverse economic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, models make the task easier by providing different ways to approach complex issues. There are two major health promotion models: the health belief model and the health promotion model.
The health belief model (HBM) attempts to predict health-related behavior in specific belief patterns. According to the HBM, a person's...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Community Interventions

Background:

  • Disadvantaged urban neighborhoods face challenges in adolescent well-being and employment.
  • The Barcelona Health in the Neighborhoods strategy aims to address these disparities.
  • Targeted interventions are needed to support adolescent development in vulnerable communities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a community-based intervention promoting healthy leisure, training, and work experiences for adolescents.
  • To assess the intervention's impact on emotional well-being, self-esteem, social relationships, substance use, and labor market access.
  • To understand the experiences of participants and educators through mixed-methods analysis.

Main Methods:

  • A non-experimental pre-post mixed-methods evaluation was conducted.
  • Quantitative data collected via questionnaires at three time points (pre, post-1, post-2) from 252, 142, and 81 participants, respectively.
  • Qualitative data gathered through interviews with 27 participants and educators.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements observed in adolescent emotional well-being, employment rates, perseverance, and trust.
  • Enhanced practical knowledge, social skills, and interpersonal relationships reported by participants.
  • An increase in tobacco and alcohol consumption was noted post-intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Community-based interventions integrating healthy leisure and vocational training can facilitate youth employment and enhance overall quality of life.
  • While beneficial for well-being and labor insertion, such programs require strategies to mitigate potential increases in substance use.
  • The findings underscore the importance of holistic support for adolescents in disadvantaged neighborhoods.
