Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the dissociation between subjective fatigue and objective performance in rugby players undergoing repeated tackling.
  • To understand how fatigue impacts tackle kinematics, kinetics, and countermovement jump performance.

Main Methods:

  • 29 amateur male rugby players performed 30 maximal-effort tackles.
  • 3D motion analysis captured tackle kinematics and kinetics; countermovement jump (CMJ) assessed performance.
  • Subjective fatigue was measured using visual analog scales throughout the protocol.

Main Results:

  • Subjective physical and mental fatigue significantly increased, especially after 20 tackles (p < 0.05).
  • No significant changes in objective tackle performance (velocity, momentum, kinetic energy) were observed.
  • A positive association was found between CMJ height and tackle velocity, but not between subjective fatigue and CMJ height.

Conclusions:

  • Repeated tackling induces significant subjective fatigue without immediate objective performance decline.
  • Athletes may perceive fatigue before actual performance impairment occurs.
  • Integrating subjective and objective measures is vital for effective athlete monitoring in collision sports.
