[The problem of digital overload: cognitive impairments in young people]
1International University of Restorative Medicine, Moscow, Russia.
Abstract:
The spread of new technologies and virtual communication using personal computers, tablets, and mobile phones has had a negative impact on people's daily habits and behavior. The dependence on digital devices leads to the formation of a «psychological and emotional bond» between the user and their device, which can result in anxiety and depression, as well as cognitive impairment. Search queries on the Internet form and maintain in a person a doubt in previously acquired knowledge, requiring constant reference to a device (mobile phone, computer). In 2012, a new term «digital dementia» was introduced, which describes a possible decline in cognitive functions (in particular, memory) associated with excessive use of digital technologies (smartphones, computers, tablets). Emotional instability (apathy, irritability), which is caused by excessive use of gadgets, is accompanied by a decrease in concentration (due to constant switching between tasks), a deterioration in memory (the Internet replaces memorizing facts), and difficulties in analyzing complex information. Recognan (citicoline) is prescribed for the prevention and correction of emotional overload (anxiety, asthenia), as well as cognitive disorders that occur as a result of Internet addiction. The recommended dosage of Recognan is 500-1000 mg per day for 30 days. «Digital detox», which involves voluntarily reducing the use of digital devices, can have a positive impact on anxiety, asthenic symptoms, and cognitive impairments in Internet-addicted individuals.
