Motorized Intramedullary Lengthening Nail for an Adolescent Femoral Shaft Fracture with Associated Bone Loss: A Case

Case:
A 16-year-old boy who sustained a type IIIA open segmental femoral shaft fracture with >6 cm of bone loss was evaluated. He was treated with a magnetic lengthening nail within 2 weeks of injury. Total lengthening of 6.5 cm was completed at 60 days postoperatively. He was healed by 1 year and was back to all preferred activities with full range of motion of both the knee and hip at the final follow-up. There were no complications.
Conclusion:
Femoral lengthening through the fracture site using a motorized intramedullary nail had a good result in a patient with an open femoral fracture with associated bone loss.
