Direct online racial discrimination (ORD) increases suicidal ideation risk in Latine youth. Indirect ORD experiences did not show a significant association. Addressing direct ORD is crucial for youth suicide prevention.

Background:

Online racial discrimination (ORD) is a growing concern for Latine youth.
ORD may contribute to elevated risks for suicidal thoughts and behaviors in this demographic.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the relationship between direct and indirect experiences of ORD and suicidal ideation.
To investigate the impact of ORD on the mental health of Latine adolescents in the U.S.

Main Methods:

Cross-sectional study using data from the National Survey on Critical Digital Literacy (2020-2021).
Analysis of data from 243 self-identified Latine adolescents (ages 11-19).
Logistic regression to assess the association between individual/vicarious ORD and suicidal ideation.

Main Results:

Higher levels of direct ORD were associated with increased odds of suicidal ideation (aOR = 2.19).
No significant association was found between indirect ORD and suicidal ideation (aOR = 0.85).
These findings remained significant after adjusting for demographics, online time, and depression symptoms.

Conclusions:

Direct exposure to ORD, not indirect, is linked to higher suicidal ideation risk in Latine youth.
Findings suggest that interventions addressing direct ORD can enhance culturally responsive suicide prevention strategies for this population.
