A novel 3D-printed renal phantom successfully generated reproducible nephrograms, validating new 3D-CZT cameras for dynamic imaging. This phantom supports accurate renal functional parameter assessment in isotopic renography.
Area of Science:
- Nuclear medicine
- Medical imaging technology
- Renal physiology
Background:
- Isotopic renography is crucial for assessing upper urinary tract obstruction and renal function.
- New 3D-CZT cameras offer improved sensitivity for SPECT protocols, requiring phantom validation.
- Existing renal phantoms are often complex and limited to 2D imaging.
Purpose of the Study:
- To validate new 3D-CZT cameras using a novel 3D-printed renal phantom.
- To compare planar and full SPECT dynamic imaging acquisition methods.
- To assess the phantom's utility for simulating renal function and activity distribution.
Main Methods:
- A 3D-printed renal phantom mimicking pediatric/adult kidneys was developed.
- Kidney subunits were infused with 99mTc-Pertechnetate to simulate normal and asymmetric nephrograms.
- Acquisitions were performed using both conventional NaI(Tl) and 3D-CZT cameras for planar and SPECT imaging.
Main Results:
- The 3D phantom facilitated consistent and reproducible nephrogram acquisition.
- No significant differences were found in Tmax, T1/2, and A20min/max ratios between planar and SPECT imaging.
- Simulated asymmetric renal function showed a strong linear correlation (r=0.9455-0.9471) between activity and AUC.
Conclusions:
- The 3D phantom enables reproducible nephrogram acquisition with parameters comparable to clinical data.
- 3D-CZT camera imaging at low activity yielded results equivalent to conventional cameras.
- The developed phantom is suitable for validating 3D-CZT cameras in dynamic isotopic renography.
