Ethics in Research01:56

Ethics in Research

25.3K
Today, scientists agree that good research is ethical in nature and is guided by a basic respect for human dignity and safety. However, this has not always been the case. Modern researchers must demonstrate that the research they perform is ethically sound.

Behaviorism

4.2K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

Obedience

35.2K
According to obedience research, we may harm others under the forceful pressures of an authority figure (Milgram, 1974). How about if the inappropriate orders were delivered with less force? The increasing interdependence between nurses and physicians compelled Hofling and his colleagues to explore nurses’ reactions to a potentially harmful medical request made by the perceived authority figure, the doctor (Hofling, Brotzman, Dalrymple, Graves, & Pierce, 1966). In this situation,...

Area of Science:

  • Animal-assisted interventions
  • Human-animal interaction
  • Canine behavior and training

Background:

  • Assistance dogs significantly enhance human quality of life.
  • Puppy raisers, often university students, provide foundational training, including socialization and basic commands.
  • Bringing dogs-in-training to university classes may pose challenges for students with allergies or anxieties, instructors, and the dogs themselves.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of in-training assistance dogs in university classrooms.
  • To assess potential disruptions and stress experienced by students, instructors, and the dogs.
  • To evaluate the feasibility of continuing puppy raising activities in academic settings.

Main Methods:

  • Survey distributed to instructors, students, and puppy raisers.
  • Data collected on attitudes, disruptions, and signs of stress in classroom environments.
  • Analysis of general student attitudes and reported issues by puppy raisers and their dogs.

Main Results:

  • The majority of students reported positive attitudes towards having in-training assistance dogs present.
  • Puppy raisers reported minimal behavioral issues with their dogs in class.
  • Dogs-in-training showed few observable signs of stress in the classroom setting.

Conclusions:

  • University students can effectively continue initial assistance dog training in classrooms.
  • The presence of dogs-in-training does not appear to negatively impact the learning environment or well-being of students, instructors, or the dogs.
  • The study supports the continuation of puppy raising programs within university settings.
