Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

729
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

430
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Traumatic Memory01:20

Traumatic Memory

503
Emotionally traumatic events often lead to memories that are exceptionally vivid and enduring, sometimes persisting with remarkable clarity throughout an individual's life. A classic example of this phenomenon is a person who survives a car accident. Even years later, they may recall every detail of the event with startling accuracy — the screeching of the tires, the jarring impact, and the acrid smell of burning rubber. Such vividness contrasts sharply with how an individual...

Summary

A new 29-item Peritraumatic Response Questionnaire (PTRQ) effectively assesses peritraumatic reactions like tonic immobility and dissociation. This validated instrument minimizes content overlap, offering a reliable tool for epidemiological research on trauma responses.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Trauma Studies

Background:

  • Existing instruments for peritraumatic reactions (e.g., tonic immobility, dissociation, panic) suffer from content overlap.
  • A comprehensive, single instrument integrating these dimensions is lacking.
  • This gap hinders accurate assessment in research and clinical settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and validate a comprehensive instrument for assessing peritraumatic reactions.
  • To consolidate items from various sources, addressing content redundancy.
  • To create a psychometrically sound tool for epidemiological and clinical use.

Main Methods:

  • Qualitative and quantitative approaches were employed.
  • Expert review was conducted to identify and eliminate content overlap and redundancy.
  • Psychometric assessments included exploratory structural equation modeling and confirmatory factor analysis.
  • A 29-item instrument, the Peritraumatic Response Questionnaire (PTRQ), was developed.

Main Results:

  • The 29-item PTRQ demonstrated robust configural and metric properties.
  • The instrument showed high reliability and absence of content redundancy.
  • Convergent and discriminant factorial validity were established.
  • Unique items per factor were identified.

Conclusions:

  • The Peritraumatic Response Questionnaire (PTRQ) is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing peritraumatic experiences.
  • Its current form is suitable for epidemiological studies.
  • Further research may enhance its comprehensiveness for broader applications.
