Prediabetes significantly increases the risk of male sexual dysfunction. Men with prediabetes have a 2.5-fold higher chance of experiencing sexual dysfunction compared to those with normal blood sugar levels.
Area of Science:
- Endocrinology
- Men's Health
- Metabolic Disorders
Background:
- Prediabetes is a growing global metabolic disorder.
- While its vascular and metabolic effects are known, its link to male sexual dysfunction is unclear.
Purpose of the Study:
- To analyze the association between prediabetes and sexual dysfunction in men.
- To summarize existing evidence through a meta-analysis.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Scopus.
- Meta-analysis of ten observational studies involving 11,000 participants.
- Assessed study quality using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and publication bias using Egger's test.
Main Results:
- Prediabetic men had 2.50 times higher odds of sexual dysfunction (OR: 2.50, 95% CI: 1.35-4.64).
- High heterogeneity (I² = 87.9%) was observed.
- The quality of evidence was generally low, per the GRADE approach.
Conclusions:
- Men with prediabetes face a significantly higher risk of sexual dysfunction.
- Further high-quality prospective studies are recommended to confirm findings and investigate mechanisms.
