Abstract:
Photochromism in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are primarily due to ligand isomerization and radical formation in previous reports. Herein, we discovered an alternative mechanism driven by photogenerated CN- vacancy in a bismuth-based MOF (BiFe(CN)6), which exhibits remarkable, stable and irreversible photochromic behavior without the introduction of guest molecules. Under light irradiation, BiFe(CN)6 exhibits a remarkable color change from brown to green, accompanied by the formation of CN- vacancy. Mechanism research indicates that the impact of full-shell valence electron configuration of Bi3+ on the charge transfer process is crucial for the formation of CN- vacancy, and analogues containing metals with full-shell valence electron configuration, such as ZnFe PBA and CdFe PBA, are also found to display irreversible photochromic behavior, proving the universality of this phenomenon. This vacancy-mediated photochromism represents a distinct pathway different from conventional mechanisms, shedding a light on designing smart photoresponse materials.

Colors and Magnetism
When atoms or molecules absorb light at the proper frequency, their electrons are excited to higher-energy orbitals. For many main group atoms and molecules, the absorbed photons are in the ultraviolet range of the electromagnetic spectrum, which cannot be detected by the human eye. For coordination compounds, the energy difference between the d orbitals often allows photons in the visible range to be absorbed and emitted, which is seen as colors by the human...

Structural Isomerism
Isomers are different chemical species that have the same chemical formula. Structural isomerism of coordination compounds can be divided into two subcategories, the linkage isomers and coordination-sphere isomers.
Linkage isomers occur when the coordination compound contains a ligand that can bind to the transition metal center through two different atoms. For example, the CN− ligand can bind through the carbon atom or through the nitrogen atom. Similarly, SCN− can...
