Introduction to Joints

The adult human body usually has 206 bones, and except for the hyoid bone in the neck, each bone is connected to at least one other bone. Joints are the location where bones come together. Many joints allow for movement between the bones. At these joints, the articulating surfaces of the adjacent bones can move smoothly against each other. However, the bones of other joints may be joined by connective tissue or cartilage. These joints are designed for stability and provide little or no movement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the utility of top-view video recordings for assessing broiler walking ability.
  • To identify objective gait features measurable from video for genetic improvement programs.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of five walking features (lateral body oscillation, steps taken, mean speed, max speed, max acceleration) from top-view videos of 595 broilers.
  • Manual gait scoring (GS) of 355 broilers.
  • Estimation of heritability for gait scores and video-derived features.

Main Results:

  • All analyzed walking features differed significantly across gait score groups.
  • Lateral body oscillation was higher in GS2 birds; speed decreased with increasing GS.
  • Low to moderate heritability was found for lateral body oscillation, steps taken, mean speed, and manual gait score.

Conclusions:

  • Top-view video analysis provides valuable insights into broiler walking ability.
  • Objective gait features derived from video can be used in breeding programs to enhance broiler welfare and performance.
