Summary

This study found diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) in 5.4% of prediabetic patients. Older age and hypertension were associated with DISH in this population.

Background:

  • Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is a systemic condition characterized by widespread calcification and ossification of ligaments and entheses.
  • Prediabetes is a state of impaired glucose metabolism that increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of DISH among patients diagnosed with prediabetes.
  • To explore potential associations between DISH and clinical characteristics in a prediabetic cohort.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective evaluation of 166 prediabetic patients.
  • Thoracic and lumbar radiography was performed on 67 patients with symptoms suggestive of DISH.
  • DISH diagnosis followed Resnick and Niwayama criteria; demographic, clinical, and laboratory data were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • DISH was diagnosed in 9 patients, representing 5.4% of the overall cohort and 13.4% of symptomatic patients.
  • Patients with DISH were significantly older (p=0.004) and more frequently hypertensive (p=0.047) than those without DISH.
  • Trends toward higher body mass index, fasting glucose, and smoking rates were observed in the DISH group, but did not reach statistical significance.

Conclusions:

  • This study is the first to investigate the frequency of DISH in a prediabetic population.
  • Findings suggest a potential association between DISH and prediabetic status.
  • Further research is warranted to confirm the relationship between DISH and prediabetes.
