Exploring patients' perceptions and anticipated concerns regarding bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery, particularly laparoscopic procedures, is becoming increasingly common for achieving sustained weight loss. However, the decision-making process is complex and influenced by psychological, social, and medical factors. Despite its growing relevance, there is a lack of research exploring patients' perceptions and expectations regarding bariatric surgery in China. This study aims to explore patients' perceptions, concerns, expectations, and hopes related to the outcomes of bariatric surgery. Additionally, it investigates patients' information received, education, and support needs both pre- and post-surgery.

The study included 68 individuals aged above 18 years who had undergone bariatric surgery. Participants were recruited from four hospitals in China, and data were collected through a self-administered open-ended questionnaire. The data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach.

The study uncovered that a majority of individuals had experienced unsuccessful dieting attempts before opting for bariatric surgery. Concerns and fears about bariatric surgery included potential complications and long-term effects. Expected benefits ranged from weight loss to improved health indicators, enhanced lifestyle, and psychological well-being. Participants voiced varied information needs, emphasizing trust in medical professionals, and a desire for detailed information on surgical procedures, risks, and postoperative care. Participants varied in pre-operative expectations, highlighting the need for detailed surgery explanations, psychological counseling, and assurance of suitability. For post-operative, they sought responsive communication and emphasized continuous follow-up to achieve sustainable weight loss.

Findings underscore the necessity for healthcare professionals to address diverse patient expectations, dispel myths, and provide ongoing support to ensure successful outcomes and long-term weight management post-bariatric surgery.
