Lingual Schwannoma: A Rare Presentation Reported in Iraqi Patient

The tongue is an essential organ that accounts for proper deglutition and speech Schwannomas are rare benign tumors, also known as neurilemmomas, that originate from Schwann cells present around peripheral nerve fibers. It can occur at any age, but the incidence is higher between 20 and 50 years old. Among intraoral sites, the tongue is the most commonly affected; however, schwannomas are rarely present in the tongue, accounting for 1 to 2% of all cases. We present a case report of an oral schwannoma at the lateral border in the posterior region of the anterior two-thirds of the tongue in 22 years male patient. under general anesthesia (nasal intubation). A longitudinal incision was made in a simple direction, and a grayish-white mass appeared directly, Complete excision of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination revealed a well-encapsulated lesion composed of proliferating bland-looking spindle-shaped cells, with cellular foci (Antoni A) and Verocay body formation and hypocellular foci (Antoni B). Surgical complete excision through a transoral approach is the ideal treatment to guarantee reductions in the recurrence rate. Although the postoperative follow-up of our patient was quite good, follow-up is important to exclude any recurrence or the possibility of malignant changes.
