Six-junction GaAs laser power converters for simultaneous wireless power and data transfer and cross-band analysis
Abstract:
An 808 nm six-junction laser power converter (LPC) was systematically tested for its performance under continuous laser irradiation at powers of 507 mW, 379 mW, and 258 mW, achieving a maximum photovoltaic conversion efficiency of 51.8%. Its signal reception capability was investigated using pulsed laser illumination with 12 kΩ and 470 Ω external loads, and its frequency response curves were plotted. For simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT), LPC performance was evaluated under fixed continuous and 100 kHz pulsed laser conditions, with five different external load resistances (5 Ω to 1 kΩ), enabling the data transmission rate of 200 kbit/s. Additionally, a 1064 nm single-junction LPC was illuminated with the same 808 nm laser source to evaluate its power conversion potential in a cross-band absorption scenario for the first time. The SWIPT performance of the 1064 nm LPC was also examined under different loads (5 Ω and 100 Ω) and frequencies (50 kHz and 100 kHz).

The Maximum Power Transfer Theorem
The load connected draws the current, and the circuit delivers the power to the load. The alternating current flowing through the load is determined using the rectangular form of voltages, currents, network impedance, and load impedance. The average power delivered to the load is obtained from the product of the square of current and load resistance.
