- 103,378 AIS patients analyzed; 1.4% had COVID-19, 5.9% had bacterial infection.
- Poststroke dementia incidence rates: 0.011 (COVID-19), 0.011 (bacterial), 0.010 (no infection).
- Bacterial infection significantly increased dementia risk (aRR: 1.13); COVID-19 showed a similar, non-significant trend (aRR: 1.14).
Conclusions:
- AIS patients with bacterial infections or COVID-19 exhibited higher poststroke dementia incidence.
- COVID-19 infection may be linked to an elevated risk of dementia following a stroke.
