Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.

Levels of Health Promotion and Illness Prevention

14.1K
Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.8K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

Principles of Disease Surveillance01:26

Principles of Disease Surveillance

439
Disease surveillance is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health data essential to the planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health practice. This process integrates data dissemination to entities responsible for preventing and controlling disease, injury, and disability. Surveillance systems provide crucial information for action, helping public health authorities make informed decisions to manage and prevent outbreaks, ensure public safety, optimize...

Methods Of Healthcare Delivery System

3.9K
At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Summary

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is linked to Alzheimer's disease, especially in people with HIV. Better health and grit may reduce SCD risk in aging Nigerians with HIV, informing future interventions.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Public Health
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Persistent subjective cognitive decline (SCD) increases Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) risk, particularly in people with HIV.
  • Aging populations with HIV are growing, yet research on SCD in this demographic, specifically in Nigerians, is limited.
  • Health status and grit (a non-cognitive trait) are potential predictors of cognitive function and may influence SCD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of health status and grit on SCD in adult Nigerians living with HIV.
  • To examine the moderating role of grit on the association between health status and SCD.
  • To provide groundwork for future research and inform cognitive health interventions for aging adults with HIV.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 117 adult Nigerians living with HIV.
  • Participants completed questionnaires on sociodemographic factors, health status, non-cognitive traits (grit, resilience), and SCD.
  • Multivariate linear regression was used to analyze the association between health status and SCD, and the moderating effect of grit, controlling for covariates.

Main Results:

  • Better subjective health was negatively associated with SCD (ß = -12.664, p < .001).
  • Grit was positively associated with SCD (ß = 1.135, p < .001), but moderated the relationship, reducing the effect of subjective health on SCD (ß = -0.405, p < .001).
  • Being married or living together was associated with lower SCD (ß = 2.907, p < .006), while higher collectivist views correlated with higher SCD (ß = 2.907, p < .008).

Conclusions:

  • Health status and grit significantly influence subjective cognitive decline in aging Nigerians with HIV.
  • Grit can mitigate the negative impact of poor health on cognitive decline.
  • Findings support the development of targeted cognitive health interventions for this vulnerable population.
