Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the correlation between various auditory function measures and cognitive scores.
  • To compare the relationship of pure tone thresholds and speech recognition thresholds (SRT) with cognitive function.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 17,057 individuals aged 60+ from the CHOICE-Cohort study.
  • Pure tone audiometry and speech recognition threshold (SRT) tests were used to assess hearing.
  • Cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE).

  • Significant negative correlations were found between hearing thresholds and MMSE scores, especially at lower frequencies.
  • SRT demonstrated a stronger correlation with MMSE scores than pure tone thresholds.

  • Speech recognition threshold (SRT) is a more sensitive indicator of cognitive health in older adults than pure tone thresholds.
  • Speech audiometry should be considered in routine cognitive assessments for the elderly.
