Health promotion allows a person to control the determinants of health, resulting in an improved health status. It enhances the quality of life and reduces premature deaths. Health promotion and illness prevention programs help people make beneficial choices to reduce the risk of disease and disabilities. There are three health promotion and illness prevention levels: primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention.
In primary prevention, actions taken before disease onset prevent the disease from...

Preventive Healthcare Services

1.8K
Preventive healthcare services keep people healthy via frequent check-ups, screening, and counseling. They primarily aid in disease prevention rather than treating an acute or chronic illness. Preventive treatment also keeps individuals productive and energetic, allowing them to work well into their retirement years. Examples of preventive care services include:

At the different levels of the healthcare system, we see varying methods of healthcare used. These methods include managed care systems, case management, and primary healthcare.
Managed Care System:
The managed care system is designed to control the cost while maintaining the quality of care. The patient's care from admission to discharge is planned by the primary care provider or the case manager, also known as the gatekeeper. In a managed care system, the number of care providers is...

Summary

Having a personal connection to memory-affecting conditions improves dementia knowledge among Latinos/as/es/xs. However, those with connections were less likely to believe doctors offer useful treatments, highlighting a need for better healthcare access and education.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Public Health
  • Health Disparities

Background:

  • Latinos/as/es/xs experience significant healthcare access disparities for memory conditions, including Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD).
  • Understanding knowledge gaps is crucial for developing effective interventions and support for cognitive impairments in this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore how personal connections to individuals with memory-affecting conditions influence Latine perspectives on cognitive impairments.
  • To identify potential knowledge disparities impacting ADRD diagnosis and care within the Latino/a/e/x community.

Main Methods:

  • A 47-item survey was administered to 1,019 self-identified Latino/a/e/x adults (aged 18+) in the US and Puerto Rico (Sept 2021-Apr 2024).
  • The survey assessed dementia knowledge, importance of seeking care, embarrassment, and beliefs about medical efficacy using a 5-point Likert scale.
  • Statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests, compared groups with and without personal connections to memory-affecting conditions.

Main Results:

  • Half of respondents had a family member or friend with ADRD, showing higher dementia knowledge (p < 0.001).
  • Those with personal connections were more likely to seek medical care and reported less embarrassment but were less likely to believe doctors provide useful medications or training (p = 0.01).
  • 75.8% of all respondents believed home care is very/extremely important, regardless of personal connection.

Conclusions:

  • Latinos/as/es/xs with personal experience of memory-affecting conditions showed nuanced views, being more informed yet less confident in medical treatments.
  • Findings highlight the need for targeted educational initiatives and improved access to quality healthcare services for timely ADRD diagnosis and care in the Latino/a/e/x community.
