This study investigates how school quality and educational attainment impact midlife cognitive function differently across childhood socioeconomic status (SES). Findings will clarify if education benefits all socioeconomic groups equally or if it amplifies existing disparities.
Area of Science:
- Sociology
- Cognitive Science
- Education Policy
Background:
- Educational attainment and school quality are linked to later-life cognitive function.
- Childhood socioeconomic status (SES) is associated with cognitive function, partly mediated by education.
- It remains unclear if educational benefits vary by childhood SES, with competing theories suggesting cumulative advantage or compensatory leveling.
Purpose of the Study:
- To examine if the associations between school quality, educational attainment, and midlife cognitive functioning differ by childhood SES.
- To test hypotheses derived from cumulative advantage and compensatory leveling theories regarding educational impacts on cognition across SES levels.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing nationally representative data from the U.S. High School & Beyond (HSB) cohort study (N ≈ 25,500).
- Analyzing longitudinal data from high school (1980s) to midlife (2021-22).
- Assessing educational contexts, outcomes, childhood SES, and midlife cognitive functioning.
Main Results:
- Results are pending analysis.
Conclusions:
- Conclusions will be drawn upon completion of data analysis.
