Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between historical atmospheric lead levels (HALL) and self-reported memory problems in older adults.
  • To assess the long-term cognitive consequences of early-life exposure to lead pollution.

Main Methods:

  • Mapped historical atmospheric lead levels (HALL) across the contiguous US (1960-1974).
  • Analyzed individual-level data on memory problems from the American Community Survey (ACS) for adults aged 65+.
  • Calculated odds ratios for memory problems based on PUMA-level HALL, controlling for demographic factors.

Main Results:

  • Higher HALL was associated with significantly increased odds of self-reported memory impairment in two independent ACS samples (2012-2017 and 2018-2021).
  • Odds ratios for memory problems ranged from 1.17 to 1.22 across different levels of historical lead exposure.

Conclusions:

  • Living in areas with historical atmospheric lead levels above 0.4 µg/m³ correlated with approximately 20% higher odds of memory problems in older adults.
  • These findings support the link between early-life lead exposure and lasting cognitive health outcomes.
  • Declining lead exposure may contribute to the observed decrease in dementia incidence in the US.
