Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) involves impaired amyloid-beta drainage. This study found reduced cholinergic and adrenergic receptors in aging and CAA brains, suggesting potential therapeutic targets for maintaining brain vascular health.

  • This innervation is compromised early in Alzheimer's disease (AD), suggesting receptor dysfunction in CAA and AD.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings indicate a downregulation of key cholinergic and adrenergic receptors in aging and CAA, impacting vascular smooth muscle function and IPAD.
    • Future therapies targeting α7 nicotinic acetylcholine and α adrenergic receptors may help maintain IPAD integrity during aging and in CAA.
    • Preserving CVSMC integrity through receptor modulation could be a strategy to combat Aβ accumulation in the brain.
