Chemical Synapses01:26

Chemical Synapses

11.1K
Chemical synapses are specialized sites between two neurons or between a neuron and a non-neuronal cell like a muscle, glandular or sensory cell.
Because chemical synapses depend on the release of neurotransmitter molecules from synaptic vesicles to pass on their signal, there is an approximately one millisecond delay between when the axon potential reaches the presynaptic terminal and when the neurotransmitter leads to opening of postsynaptic ion channels. Additionally, this signaling is...

Electrical Synapses

10.0K
Electrical synapses found in all nervous systems play important and unique roles. In these synapses, the presynaptic and postsynaptic membranes are very close together (3.5 nm) and are actually physically connected by channel proteins forming gap junctions.
Gap junctions allow the current to pass directly from one cell to the next. In contrast, in the chemical synapse, the neurotransmitters carry the information through the synaptic cleft from one neuron to the next. They consist of two...

Antiepileptic Drugs: Modulators of Neurotransmitter Release Mediated by SV2A Protein

790
Antiepileptic drugs, such as levetiracetam (Keppra) and brivaracetam (Briviact), have emerged as crucial tools in managing epilepsy. These medications exert their therapeutic effects by targeting the synaptic vesicle protein SV2A, a transmembrane glycoprotein primarily found in the brain.
SV2A is a transmembrane glycoprotein located predominantly in the brain, modulating the release of neurotransmitters for neuronal communication. Both levetiracetam and brivaracetam exhibit a high affinity for...

Area of Science:

  • Materials Science
  • Neuroscience
  • Optoelectronics

Background:

  • Artificial synapses based on transition metal dichalcogenides offer stability and excellent photoelectric properties.
  • Existing devices lack ultraviolet light sensitivity, limiting their application in ultraviolet-triggered synaptic functions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop an ultraviolet-enhanced artificial synapse by combining WSe2 with a SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor.
  • To investigate the ultraviolet response and synaptic plasticity of the novel WSe2-SrAl2O4 synapse.

Main Methods:

  • Fabrication of a WSe2-SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ based artificial synapse.
  • Characterization of the synapse's photoelectric properties under ultraviolet light.
  • Evaluation of synaptic plasticity regulation and simulation of learning behavior.
  • Implementation of handwritten digit recognition using the artificial synapse.

Main Results:

  • The WSe2-SrAl2O4 synapse exhibited a 4-fold enhancement in excitatory post-synaptic current and a 9.7-fold increase in decay time compared to WSe2 alone under 365 nm light.
  • The device demonstrated excellent regulation of synaptic plasticity across various parameters (power densities, pulse widths, intervals, numbers).
  • Simulated learning behavior showed a forgetting time of 25 s, and handwritten digit recognition achieved 96.39% accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • The integration of SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ phosphor significantly enhances the ultraviolet response of WSe2-based artificial synapses.
  • This novel ultraviolet-enhanced synapse offers a promising pathway for advanced brain-inspired computing and ultraviolet photoelectric applications.
