Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI): A systematic-narrative review of systematic reviews

Context:
The global demand for chemotherapy is projected to increase by 53% by 2040, underscoring the need to better understand its side effects. One of the most significant is chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI, also known as "Chemobrain").
Objective:
To provide a comprehensive and critical overview of the most relevant neurocognitive sequelae associated with CICI and to offer a synthetic view of the neurocognitive tests used in its detection.
Methods:
A systematic-narrative hybrid review approach, accepting 29 systematic reviews articles.
Results:
This review identifies the most frequently affected neurocognitive domains and subdomains, and specifies the batteries, screenings and tests most commonly employed in their assessment. This study proposes a three-stage model for improved evaluation: (1) application of a comprehensive neurocognitive screening, (2) administration of prioritized domain-specific tests, and (3) inclusion of subjective measures addressing cognitive complaints and quality of life. This integrative framework aims to enhance the accuracy and clinical utility of CICI assessment.
