Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Spinal Surgery
  • Geriatric Medicine

Background:

  • Adult spinal deformity (ASD) negatively impacts patients' social lives.
  • Understanding the effects of surgical intervention on social functioning in elderly patients with ASD is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of adult spinal deformity surgery on social functioning in patients aged 60 and older.
  • To assess changes in personal relationships and social activity limitations following spinal fusion surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Post-hoc analysis of a prospective multicenter observational study.
  • Included patients ≥60 years undergoing ≥5 levels of spinal fusion.
  • Assessed social function using Scoliosis Research Society-22r (SRS-22r) questionnaire and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) at baseline and 2-year follow-up.

Main Results:

  • 40.6% of patients reported significant impact on personal relationships pre-op vs. 14.7% at 2 years (SRS-22r Q14).
  • 47.7% experienced limitations in social outings pre-op vs. 17.1% at 2 years (SRS-22r Q18).
  • Social function rated as normal increased from 8.7% pre-op to 44.1% at 2 years (ODI Q9).

Conclusions:

  • Adult spinal deformity surgery demonstrated a positive impact on social functioning in elderly patients.
  • Improvements in personal relationships and social activity participation were noted post-surgery.
  • Spinal fusion surgery can enhance the quality of life for older adults with spinal deformities.
