    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Psychiatry
    • Pharmacology

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a complex psychiatric disorder.
    • Cholinergic pathways are implicated in cognitive function and mood regulation.
    • Choline is a precursor to acetylcholine, a key neurotransmitter.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the efficacy of choline chloride in reducing schizophrenic symptoms.
    • To explore the impact of choline chloride on central cholinergic activity.
    • To assess the side effects of choline chloride supplementation in schizophrenia patients.

    Main Methods:

    • A single-blind crossover study design was employed.
    • Nine patients diagnosed with schizophrenia participated in the study.
    • Choline chloride was administered at doses up to 20 g/day.

    Main Results:

    • Choline chloride did not produce significant improvements in clinical ratings of schizophrenia.
    • A notable trend indicated that choline chloride may exacerbate depressive symptoms.
    • No significant changes in central cholinergic activity markers were reported.

    Conclusions:

    • Choline chloride is not an effective treatment for reducing schizophrenic symptoms.
    • Supplementation with choline chloride may pose a risk of increasing depression in schizophrenia patients.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the complex effects of choline on psychiatric conditions.
