Immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) and hydroxyurea show promise for sickle cell disease (SCD). Long-term treatment in a severe SCD patient led to sustained SCD remission, suggesting potential therapeutic benefits.
Area of Science:
- Hematology
- Oncology
- Pharmacology
Background:
- Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a debilitating genetic blood disorder.
- Immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) are known to increase fetal hemoglobin (HbF) levels.
- IMiDs are not currently approved for SCD treatment.

Disorders of Erythrocytes
Erythrocyte disorders can be broadly categorized into two main types: anemic and polycythemic conditions.
A low oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood due to the loss, lower production, or destruction of erythrocytes is termed anemia. Hemorrhagic anemia, for example, occurs when bleeding from an external wound or internal ulcer reduces erythrocyte counts.
