Background:

Poor caregiver mental health negatively impacts parenting practices and early childhood development.
This study investigates the link between caregiver mental health and parenting in rural China.

Purpose of the Study:

To examine the correlations between caregiver mental health and parenting practices.
To identify factors influencing parenting in households with young children.

Main Methods:

Data collected from 948 households in rural China across two cohorts.
Parenting practices assessed using the Family Care Indicators (FCI).
Caregiver mental health (DASS-21), social support (MSPSS), and socioeconomic status (SES) were measured.

Main Results:

Caregivers provided more play materials, but variety did not improve.
Depressive symptoms were linked to inadequate parenting, especially fewer play materials.
Lower SES and depression correlated with less stimulating parenting; social support partially mitigated these effects.

Conclusions:

Rural Chinese caregivers face persistent mental health challenges affecting parenting.
Enhancing caregiver mental health and social support is crucial for improving home stimulation and child development.
