Summary

This study compared two swept-source optical coherence tomography biometers, finding comparable axial length measurements. However, significant differences in white-to-white, lens thickness, and anterior chamber depth may impact intraocular lens power calculations.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Accurate biometry is crucial for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation.
  • Swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) biometers offer advanced measurement capabilities.
  • Comparing different SS-OCT devices is essential for clinical practice standardization.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze the comparability of Anterion and IOLMaster 700 SS-OCT biometers.
  • To evaluate differences in key ocular biometric parameters measured by these devices.
  • To assess the potential impact of measurement discrepancies on IOL power calculations.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review and meta-analysis of comparative studies published until October 1, 2023.

  • Inclusion of 17 studies involving 2943 eyes with cataract or refractive errors.
  • Analysis of axial length, keratometry, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness, and white-to-white measurements.
  • Main Results:

    • Axial length measurements were comparable between Anterion and IOLMaster 700 (mean difference -0.01 mm).
    • Anterion showed significantly larger anterior chamber depth and lens thickness.
    • IOLMaster 700 yielded significantly larger white-to-white measurements; keratometry tended to be higher.

    Conclusions:

    • While axial length measurements are comparable, significant differences exist in other parameters between Anterion and IOLMaster 700.
    • These biometric differences may necessitate adjustments in IOL power calculations when using Anterion data.
    • Further research is needed to determine the clinical impact on refractive predictability.
