Unlocking the key requirements and capabilities for a training app on surgical tools and operating room equipment

This study was conducted with the aim of extracting data elements and analyzing the design and development requirements of a mobile-based training app for general surgical tools and Operating Room (OR) equipment for OR students.

In the initial phase of the study, essential data were collected through a review of academic resources, clinical guidelines, and existing digital apps, with the aim of identifying the Minimum Data Set (MDS) and key functional requirements for a mobile-based training app. Based on the findings of this phase, a researcher-developed questionnaire was designed and distributed. Its validity was assessed using face and content validity methods, and its reliability was confirmed through calculation of Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The final MDS was determined based on the perspectives of subject-matter experts and educators.

The main components of the app, as determined through expert surveys, include sections on surgical instruments, specialized OR equipment, an alphabetical index of instruments, and essential guidelines on the proper use, maintenance, safety, cleaning, and troubleshooting procedures before, during, and after operation. In addition, the app's design requirements were also identified, such as user registration, access through a verification code, and the ability to navigate to sections like training materials, "About Us," and recommended resources for further learning.

This study successfully identified and organized the complete set of design specifications and data components necessary for developing a training app aimed at OR trainees, specifically focused on surgical tools and equipment.
