Background:

  • Apathy is a frequent neuropsychiatric issue in neurological conditions.
  • Its prevalence in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) remains unexplored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence and characteristics of apathy in NMOSD patients.
  • To explore the relationship between apathy and various clinical and life status factors in NMOSD.

Main Methods:

  • 66 NMOSD patients were assessed using the Apathy Evaluation Scale-Self-Report (AES-S).
  • Data collected included demographics, disease history, anxiety, depression, fatigue, sleep quality, and overall quality of life.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to identify correlations and significant factors.

Main Results:

  • 40.9% of NMOSD patients showed clinically significant apathy (AES-S score ≥ 36).
  • Apathy correlated with lower education, increased attacks, longer disease duration, higher disability, and worse anxiety, depression, fatigue, and sleep quality.
  • Depression emerged as a significant independent predictor of apathy, which negatively impacted quality of life.

Conclusions:

  • Apathy is a common complication in NMOSD, strongly linked to reduced quality of life.
  • Identifying and managing apathy, particularly in the context of depression, is crucial for improving patient outcomes in NMOSD.
