Abstract:
Cognitive aging is a natural process of declining higher mental functions in elderly and senile individuals. One of the factors contributing to the acceleration of cognitive aging is atrial fibrillation (AF). It is facilitated by neuropathophysiological mechanisms underlying AF, including chronic low-grade inflammation, cerebral hypoperfusion, cerebrovascular disorders, and microembolism. These mechanisms lead to progression of brain atrophy, particularly in the hippocampus and frontal lobes, significantly impairing memory consolidation, executive and motor functions, working memory and emotional regulation. The aim of this article is to analyze modern approaches to the comprehensive prevention of cognitive aging in elderly and senile individuals with AF. These approaches include physical activity, nutritional support, sleep and circadian rhythm normalization, cognitive training, and their impact on neuroprotection and cognitive function improvement.
