    Peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) responses to Neisseria antigens were higher in patients with gonorrhea. Women showed greater stimulation than men, suggesting cell-mediated immunity may limit infection spread.

    Background:

    • Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis are related bacterial species.
    • Understanding immune responses to these pathogens is crucial for disease control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) transformation in response to gonococcal and meningococcal antigens in individuals with gonorrhea.
    • To explore potential cross-reactivity between these bacterial species.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) from 29 men and 21 women with uncomplicated gonorrhea were stimulated with purified and non-purified gonococcal (GC-I, GC-II) and meningococcal (MGC-I, MGC-II) antigens.
    • Blastogenic responses were measured and compared between sexes and to normal controls.

    Main Results:

    • PBLs from gonorrhea patients showed significantly higher blastogenic responses compared to normal controls.
    • Cross-reactivity was observed between Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis antigens.
    • Women exhibited a greater blastogenic response than men, particularly to semi-purified gonococcal antigen (GC-II).

    Conclusions:

    • Cell-mediated immunity plays a role in the immune response to Neisseria infections.
    • Sex differences in immune response may influence the course or limitation of gonococcal infections.
